Embryo freezing

A maximum of 2 embryos can be transferred into your uterus. If more embryos are available there is the potential to freeze them. The decision to freeze the embryos will depend on the number and quality of embryos remaining. It is known that embryos, which are not of good quality, will be unlikely to survive the freezing and thawing procedure. However, if there are a sufficient number of good quality embryos available, these can be frozen. The Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA) allows for the storage of embryos for up to five years and in certain cases, for up to ten years. You will be asked for your permission to freeze suitable embryos both for yourself and the recipient. The chances of a pregnancy resulting from frozen embryos are not as good as that from fresh embryos but, nevertheless, does offer a supplementary chance compared to if freezing was not available.
