How does FER work?

Frozen embryo(s) can be replaced in an artificial cycle or a natural cycle :

Artificial cycle

This is the preferred choice of treatment for frozen embryo replacement. You will receive either a one off injection (Prostap) or self-administer a nasal spray (Synarel) twice daily, followed by oestrogen tablets (Progynova). This will prepare the lining of the womb (endometrium) for implantation. The development of the endometrium will be assessed by ultrasound scanning. This is performed at intervals during your treatment. When the scan shows that the endometrium is thick enough, we will plan the timing of your embryo transfer. You will be told when to start with the hormone pessaries (Cyclogest) to make the endometrium as receptive as possible to the embryos. If the endometrium does not thicken sufficiently we cannot proceed with the embryo replacement.

Natural cycle

This treatment is only suitable for patients with a very regular cycle. The cycle is monitored using urinary ovulation testing (Assure LH) at home form day 9 or 10 of the cycle. When a positive test is achieved you need to inform the centre straight away so that we can plan your embryo transfer.
