Results of in vitro fertilisation treatment depend on several factors, the most important of which by far is the age of the female partner. The pregnancy rate certainly decreases in women who are over 38 years of age. The results of hormone tests taken at the beginning of a cycle also give an indication of the chances of successful pregnancy. This is one of the reasons why different clinics have different results. For example “clinic A” may achieve a very high pregnancy rate by excluding women from treatment who are above a certain age or who have a raised hormone level. On the other hand “clinic B” may accept older women and those with increased hormone levels. “The results of “Clinic B” will be worse than “Clinic A” but this does not necessarily reflect on the quality of “Clinic B” just on its admissions policy. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) require clinics to present data in the form of an annual live birth rate per treatment cycle commenced. A separate sheet is available listing our up to date results compared to the National Average.
