Receiving eggs

What happens during treatment?

The treatment involves the synchronisation of the donors menstrual cycle with your own. If you have periods your cycle will be suppressed either by a single injection of a drug called Prostap or by sniffing a drug called Synarel twice daily. These drugs stop your ovaries from producing hormones for the duration of the treatment. When the donor starts her drug stimulation you will take oestrogen tablets to prepare the lining of your uterus to receive embryos. The donor’s stimulation and your treatment will be synchronised so that your uterus is in the best possible condition for when the embryos are transferred.

If you have gone through an early menopause and no longer have periods, you will just need to take the oestrogen tablets without any preliminary treatment. Whatever treatment you receive, you will also be given progesterone vaginal pessaries, which will commence a few days before your embryo transfer. This is the final step in the preparation of your uterus to receive the embryos.
